Phil's Garage Sale of Campbell Structures

Page 3

Why is it that I ended up with so many Campbell Scale Model kits? I was a distributor for the company and operated a web site for them. To help promote the kits, I needed to build them and give it the best possible representation. Each one was colored the way they appeared in the company advertisements. Weathering and distressing the wood was important before the kits were assembled. In most cases, I added extra reinforcement to make the model sturdy as I planned to move them around to suite my fancy. Look at the sidewalk gang planking in the picture below as an example of pre-distressing and staining the wood.

SOLD

 Susannah's Frocks

Is item #375 and the kit sells for $69.52

My price for the detailed model is $100.00

This is one of many ornate uptown structures for that High Country mining town scenes. I colored most of the kits to look like the models Campbell built for their show models.

In the old days, a person knowledgeable about building construction, could walk down a street and tell you who built what building. Each carpenter/contractor left his trade mark on what he built. This tell, tell mark was on how he did the trim and exterior molding. The structure at left has some unique trim work on the front.

 Northern Water Tank

Kit # 376 and sells for $68.44 at Walthers.

In cold climates, a water tank was enclosed at the base so a wood or coal stove would be used to keep the water from freezing.

I used it in a snow scene with paper icicles and a light covering of #1320 Snow. This took some time and I want $125.00 for this one.

 Sherry's Scarlet Slipper

Kit # 378 now sells for $80.46 and I want $100.00

I makes one feel like their walking through the sets in "Gun Smoke". The kit was named after Sherry Collins who was the most gifted model builder and kit designer Leo ever had. Her instructions included extra drawings to help the modeler visualize how every thing fit together.

This includes the framework of a building going up next door.

Produce House

Kit # 379 sells for $82.50 and is a lot of work.

I used this structure as a Farmers Market and would sell for $100.00. All the planking has been tooled for the worn board look with nail hole detail.

SOLD

 Columbia Gazette Office

Kit #380 sells for $49.99 today, but even if I scratch built it for $10.00 bucks, I would have to sell it for $75.00 for the time involved. My model is about 1/2 inch shorter as I forgot to install the center window and siding on the side walls. A deep structure can make it difficult in a street scene if you have a street behind.

The scene is from one of my election day spoofs from many years ago. The Editor is saying, " I know who won the Presidential election, but you'll have to buy the paper to find out."
